Earl Sweatshirt is an American rapper, music producer and member of the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA). His discography includes Doris (2013) and I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside (2015). He was a series regular on Adult Swim sketch comedy series Loiter Squad (2013-14). Earl was born Thebe Neruda Kgositsile on February 24, 1994, in Chicago, Illinois. He’s also known by the monikers Sly Tendencies, RandomBlackDude, and DJ Earl Fletcher. His father, Keorapetse Kgositsile (d. 2018), was a South African poet, and his mother, Cheryl Harris, worked as a law professor. Earl attended UCLA Lab School in Los Angeles followed by New Roads High School in Santa Monica. He was sent to the Coral Reef Academy in Samoa (2010-12) because of poor grades and drug usage.
CAREER
Earl began his rap career under the stage name Sly Tendencies. His first project, Kitchen Cutlery, was released in 2008 via Myspace. He was later discovered by producer Tyler, the Creator, who invited him to join his rap group Odd Future. Earl Sweatshirt’s debut mixtape, Earl, was independently released in March 2010. The tape garnered positive reviews from publications like Pitchfork and Complex. It featured guest appearances from Vince Staples and Hodgy Beats. Earl’s first project with Odd Future, Radical, was released in May 2010. It produced four singles “Everything That’s Yours”, “Drop”, “Double Cheeseburger” and “Splatter.” The group’s debut studio album, The OF Tape Vol. 2, followed in March 2012. It peaked at #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Earl’s debut solo album, Doris, was released in August 2013 by Tan Cressida and Columbia Records. The album peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top Rap Albums chart. It was supported by the singles “Chum”, “Whoa” and “Hive” featuring Casey Veggies. Grammy-winning singer Frank Ocean appeared on the track “Sunday.” Earl’s second full-length project, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, arrived in March 2015. It sold 30,000 copies during opening week. Earl has produced music for Mac Miller, Lil Herb, Wiki and Currensy among others. He was featured on the single “Really Doe” from Danny Brown‘s 4th album, Atrocity Exhibition (2016).
Outside the studio, Earl Sweatshirt has made several appearances on television. In 2013, he was added to the main cast of Adult Swim’s Loiter Squad. The show ended in July 2014 after three seasons. Earl made guest appearances on ‘Party Legends’ and ‘Action Bronson Watches Ancient Aliens’. He’s performed on late-night talk shows like Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
